CRYPTO (NewsBlock) -
Ethereum developers on Thursday confirmed ethereum Hegota as the name of the network’s next major upgrade after
Glamsterdam, signaling continued progress on the blockchain’s long-term
technical roadmap.
The naming
decision matters as Ethereum users, developers, and investors track upcoming
changes that could affect network performance, fees, and security. While no
launch date was announced, the move provides early clarity on sequencing beyond
Glamsterdam.
The name was
agreed during a core developer discussion, according to public developer
communications. Ethereum upgrades are traditionally named alphabetically,
reflecting a structured approach to protocol development.
“Glamsterdam is
still the focus, but the next upgrade will be called Hegota,” an Ethereum core
developer said during the call.
Glamsterdam is
expected to introduce improvements tied to scalability and efficiency, building
on earlier upgrades such as Dencun, which reduced data costs for layer-two
networks. Hegota will follow Glamsterdam once those changes are deployed and
stabilized.
Ethereum
upgrades typically bundle multiple Ethereum Improvement Proposals, or EIPs,
which are proposed and reviewed by developers before being activated on the
main network. The contents of Hegota have not yet been finalized.
“At this stage,
it’s about setting expectations and keeping the roadmap visible,” another
developer said. “Specific EIPs will be discussed later.”
Market
participants often monitor upgrade timelines closely, as major changes can
influence transaction costs, developer activity, and staking dynamics on the
world’s second-largest blockchain by market value.
Ethereum has
faced increasing competition from alternative blockchains promising faster
speeds or lower fees. Developers have emphasized that Ethereum’s upgrade path
prioritizes security and decentralization over rapid changes.
“The roadmap is
about steady progress,” said Tim Beiko, who coordinates Ethereum core developer
calls. “Each upgrade builds on the last.”
The naming of
Hegota comes as Ethereum adoption continues to expand across decentralized
finance, stablecoins, and tokenized assets. Network activity has increasingly
shifted to layer-two platforms, which rely on Ethereum for settlement and
security.
Analysts said
the clear sequencing of upgrades helps reduce uncertainty for builders planning
long-term projects.
“Knowing what
comes after Glamsterdam helps teams plan,” said James Seyffart, an analyst at
Bloomberg Intelligence. “Even without dates, the roadmap matters.”
What’s Next
Developers will
continue refining the scope of the Glamsterdam upgrade, with testing expected
to take place on Ethereum test networks before any mainnet activation. Only
after Glamsterdam is finalized will detailed proposals for Hegota move forward.
The next core developer calls are expected to focus on
Glamsterdam timelines, while early technical discussions for Hegota are likely
to begin later this year. Market participants will watch for updates that
signal when the post-Glamsterdam phase could begin.
